Wild West of Madagascar – Tsiribihina River, Kirindy & Baobab Avenue
Adventure, Nature, and Relaxation in Western Madagascar
Duration: 8 Days / 7 Nights
Route: Antananarivo – Antsirabe – Miandrivazo – Tsiribihina River – Kirindy Forest – Baobab Avenue – Morondava
Detailed Itinerary
Tongasoa! Welcome to Madagascar.
Our journey begins with a scenic drive from Antananarivo to Antsirabe by private car with your driver and guide. Along the way, enjoy picturesque highland landscapes, rice paddies, and the traditional stone tombs of the Merina people.
We’ll stop in Ambatolampy to visit local metal workshops where artisans recycle aluminum to create cooking pots and decorative items.
Upon arrival in Antsirabe, you can relax at your hotel, take a rickshaw ride (pousse-pousse) to the city center, or explore the surroundings on foot.
Overnight: Royal Palace Hotel (Luxury)
After breakfast, visit local craft workshops in Antsirabe — such as the Horn of Zebu Factory, where artisans recycle metal to create miniature cars and rickshaws.
Then, continue to Miandrivazo, passing waterfalls near Betafo village and changing countryside scenery.
Miandrivazo is a small riverside town where we organize the Tsiribihina River expedition, prepare the boat, and finalize logistics.
Overnight: La Pirogue Hotel
After breakfast, drive from Miandrivazo to Masiakapy, the starting point of your river journey.
Begin your cruise on the Tsiribihina River aboard a traditional wooden boat. Relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery and abundant wildlife — herons, ducks, parrots, raptors, kingfishers, and colorful chameleons.
At midday, stop for a refreshing swim at Nosinapela Waterfall, one of Madagascar’s most beautiful natural cascades. Continue downstream, then set up camp on the sandy riverbanks. Enjoy dinner by the campfire, surrounded by nature and the sounds of the river.
Overnight: Camping on the riverbank (Full board included)
After breakfast, visit the village of Begidro to experience the daily life of rural Malagasy people. See tobacco farms, small markets, and traditional wooden houses.
Continue cruising through lush forests, baobab groves, and wildlife-rich riverbanks. With luck, you may spot crocodiles or turtles basking in the sun.
In the late afternoon, stop at a traditional village and set up camp. Enjoy dinner around the fire under a brilliant starry sky.
Overnight: Camping on the riverbank (Full board included)
After breakfast, cruise a few final miles before concluding your Tsiribihina River journey. Disembark at “Mango Tree Point”, then transfer by traditional zebu cart (approx. 5 km) to the parking area, where your driver and 4WD vehicle will be waiting.
Drive westward to Kirindy Forest, a dry deciduous reserve known for its nocturnal wildlife. After checking in at your lodge, meet your local guide for an evening night walk in search of lemurs, chameleons, and other nocturnal animals.
Overnight: Kirindy Forest Lodge
After breakfast, explore Kirindy Forest by day — home to several lemur species, rare birds, and unique dry-forest flora. Continue to visit the “Baobabs in Love” and enjoy a magnificent sunset at the world-famous Avenue of the Baobabs.
In the evening, drive to Morondava, a charming coastal town on the Mozambique Channel. Relax in your beachfront bungalow and enjoy the ocean view.
Overnight: VEWO BEACH Hotel
Your tour ends in Morondava. You can choose to:
- Fly back to Antananarivo (approx. 1 hour flight)
- Return by road (approx. 600 km by 4WD)
This itinerary can be personalized to suit your preferences — we are flexible and happy to adapt the program.
